We’re all by now fully aware that this is not an easy time for Trieste, for Italy and for the rest of the world. Yet work on organising the 21st ShorTS Festival has continued normally and non-stop. While the coming of age of the Festival has brought new, extended offerings, this year’s event opens with the need to take on fresh challenges. Challenges such as continuing to stage the event even if in a different format compared to the past, in the hope of meeting up again soon to share our Festival in piazzas and cinemas.
ShorTS abides – online!
We’ll miss the exchange of energy and ideas that seeing films live can bring, yet will still have the possibility of enjoying sharing our cinema experiences. The Festival medium and instruments may change, but not the content. Thanks to MYmovies, technical partner of this 21st ShorTS IFF and where the competing films can be seen, we’ll continue to explore the various ways of making film via the different sections.
The section Maremetraggio, traditionally dedicated to the best shorts from recent years, is still to be the keystone of the event, attracting thousands of entries from all over the world that each year offer viewers (and those who select them) a particularly interesting cross section of daily life.
Nuove Impronte, the section dedicated to seeking out up-and-coming talents, has become international and is increasingly a centre of excellence for observing, promoting and discussing modern-day cinema, with the aim of encouraging dialogue between competing filmmakers and the public, accredited film buffs or those simply curious, via meetings moderated by a film expert.
Added to the two sections making up the Festival’s key component is the focus ShorTS has placed regularly for some years now on cinema from a different country chosen each year. This year the spotlight falls on Estonian film production, in collaboration with the Estonian Short Film Center.
One of the more outstanding new features of this year’s Festival is also the creation for the occasion of an ad hoc new section, Science&Society, with the collaboration of ESOF, Euroscience Open Forum.
The decision to go online has also opened up new opportunities, first of all that of extending the range of participants to include side events such as the 24H ShorTS Comics Marathon which is to expand so as to cover the whole of Italy.
There is also a happy addition to the jury of the now long-awaited date with ShorterKids’n’Teens, involving children from primary and secondary schools and enabling younger audiences to become familiar with the shorts genre.
As well as promoting youth cinema from Italy and elsewhere, there will also be opportunities for interaction, albeit at a distance, with writers, directors and producers as well as other cultural activities.
Training, another particularly important aspect of ShorTS, is also to continue with ShorTS Pitching Training organised during the Festival.
This year the workshop aimed at directors (mostly from film schools from all over Europe) and international producers who have a shorts project as work in progress will be held entirely online.
The workshop is organised in a partnership with NISI MASA – European Network of Young Cinema, which since 2001 has represented a benchmark for young European filmmakers, with collaboration from the CNC (Centro Nazionale del Cortometraggio).
This, and much more besides, at the ShorTS International Film Festival.
