Our volunteers will have the opportunity to work in close contact with the staff in the execution of the most important tasks for the organisation of the event: hospitality, promotion and the setting-up of venues.

You will be able to practise any foreign languages you may know, meet lots of interesting people and discover everything that happens backstage at a big international event.

A SEA OF SHORT FILMS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD TO COMPETE IN TRIESTE FROM 2ND TO 10TH JULY 2015

Over 1300 short films from every corner of the globe took part in the selection for the 16th ShorTS International Film Festival, organised by Associazione Maremetraggio, to be held in Trieste between the 2nd and 10th of July.

89 finalists were chosen to compete for the € 10,000 prize and the various other awards up for grabs.

From Tunisia, Denmark, the USA, Australia, Iraq, Lebanon and of course Italy, 79 great short films that have already won awards at other festivals, have been chosen by Associazione Maremetraggio. They will be screened between the 2nd and 10th of July on a giant screen in Piazza Verdi, competing to become the Number One Short of the competition.

The festival will also screen 10 films from the “Last Chance” section – a section for short films that are yet to have won any awards. These have been selected by Chiara Valenti Omero, president of Associazione Maremetraggio and artistic director of the festival, alongside a selection committee, from a shortlist of films produced by young, first-time directors. These 10 films will also be entered into the competition for the € 10,000 prize for the world’s best short.

Among the awards to be won is Most Interesting Italian Director, the prestigious “Studio Universal” prize, thanks to the renewal of the partnership between Maremetraggio and Studio Universal (Mediaset Premium on DTTV) – ‘the movie network from the people who make the movies’. This includes acquiring the rights to televise the winning Italian short chosen by Canale’s own jury. There are also prizes for the Best Animated Short Film, the Best Italian Editing, awarded by the AMC (Assocazione Montatori Cinematografici), and many others.

In amongst the 89 short films in this year’s ShorTS International Film Festival, you will find Oscar-winner “Helium”: a touching story of a dying, hospitalised boy and a hospital attendant, who, through different short stories, creates an imaginary world for the boy, where suffering does not exist and everything is light and magical like helium.

Also chosen for the festival is a comedy splatter film from the USA, “Fool’s Day”: an April fool’s joke played on a teacher takes a turn for the worse when murder gets involved and there’s a corpse that needs hiding. From Tunisia comes “Père”: after taking a pregnant, single woman to hospital, a taxi driver is accused of being the baby’s father. After a paternity test, he discovers his life was not as he had thought it to be: a profound lesson in forgiveness. The future couldn’t be horrifying for a father and son than in “The Nostalgist”, a short British film where, thanks to an innovative system, dirty and degrading reality can be turned into a beautiful paradise. However, one day the system becomes defective and father and son when confronted by hard reality, decide they prefer the fake illusion. Then there’s the landing of a strange object on the field of an American factory in the 1960s in “The Landing”; A weather report that determines the date of the Normandy landings in “The Weather Report”; “Yo te Quiero”, a lovely stop motion about the friendship between a boy and a young foal; and “Tobacco Burn” a film about slavery in the USA. Friuli Venezia Giulia also features in the selection, thanks to Francesco Roder, a director from Sacile (Pordenone) and graduate of Università DAMS in Udine, and his film “Snowflake”, shot in New York.

A new section dedicated to a younger audience, a special tribute and many other surprises… With so many new things in store, this summer won’t be missing much! So, are you ready for the season of swimsuits and ShorTS?

ShorTS – International Film Festival

Trieste, Italy, from 2th to 10th of July 2015

 

XVI Edition

The XVI Edition of ShorTS –International Film Festival is getting closer! The Festival, lauded in Italy and everywhere around the world, will take place in Trieste, Italy, from 2th to 10th of July 2015, in the magnificent piazza Verdi, full by film lovers.  As usual, we offer you 9 days of excitement and promising new cinema.

Screening marathon, special events, workshops, cocktail parties, happenings, Q&As, meetings with actors and film-makers – we’ll have it all! The Festival is dedicated to young cinema, and always attracts many guests, new talents and film celebrities from all over the world, as well as tourists, eager to enrich their experiences in Trieste and Friuli-Venezia-Giulia.

Sections of  ShorTS  2015

Our traditional Maremetraggio section is reserved for award-winning short films from all around the world,  that were awarded prizes and honorable mentions  in 2014. All films in this selection will compete for the Best Short Film Award (€ 10.000). Moreover, we feature many other awards and prizes for films in this section:  Award for Best Italian Film, Best Animated Short Film, Best Animation Short Film Award, People’s Choice Award, AMC Award, Studio Universal Award, a prestigious prize by our partners at Studio Universal (Mediaset on DTT), the movie channel brought to you by movie-makers. The award winner will be offered a chance to strike a deal with Studio Universal.

Debut Films section keeps tabs on  the most recent Italian feature films, showcasing works that have received little attention in theaters.

We are also happy to announce the brand-new Last Chance section, which will feature the most recent (produced after January 2014) films that did not win any awards and do not exceed 10 minutes.  Ten selected films from this section will be included in the Maremetraggio Section of the Festival and will be able to compete for its awards and prizes.

This year we are also glad to present to you SweeTS 4 Kids  – a competitive section that will feature short films suitable for a younger audience. This section is organized and curated by the youngest Artistic Director in Italian festival circuit – Tommaso, 10. The Jury will consist of children aged from 8 to 12.

 

Retrospectives and Tributes

In the past,  we’ve offered you spotlights on famous Italian actors and actresses (Laura Morante, Margherita Buy, Sergio Rubini, Francesca Neri) and emerging new talents in Italian cinema (Elena Radonicich, Luca Marinelli, Michele Alhaique, Andrea Bosca, Michele Riondino, Alba Rohrwacher), who become famous years later. In the current edition, ShorTS is going to invite young emerging talents of the Italian film industry to step into the spotlight, along with the films that starred said actors or actresses. Just like every year, public meetings will be scheduled, during which the protagonist of this year’s spotlight will tell his or her story and share their vision of their future in the film industry.  Moreover, homage will be paid to a certain renowned Italian director,  who will have an opportunity to meet his fans during a masterclass.

 

 Focus on the Foreign Cinematography Feature

In the previous editions of this section, we featured Kazakhstan and India. This year, we will offer you to live the  experience of a European country (we haven’t decided yet which one). Beside cinema, we will  explore together the cuisine, photography, and theatrical culture of that country.

Even More of OLTRE IL MURO

Associazione Maremetraggio, always striving to become the most social friendly organization there is, is bringing cinema to those who need it, after 2009 extending its program of film screenings in the Casa Circondariale di Trieste (prison – T.N.). In 2012, as the initiative was getting increasingly positive feedback from the inmates,  it has evolved into something bigger. We added educational value to it and enough content to go on for the whole year. Thanks to the invaluable collaboration of Davide Del Degan and Festival President and Artistic Director Chiara Valenti Omero, we organized a series of lectures and meetings, in order to educate the inmates about basic cinematographic notions and to encourage them to produce cinema themselves. Moreover, some of the inmates are going to participate in the jury for future editions of ShorTS Festival and are going to choose a winner of Premio OLTRE IL MURO Award.

 

Public Meetings and Workshops

ShorTS is a well-known supporter of young and talented film-makers, that usually start their careers with short films, and by participating in our Festival they introduce new audiences to their work and make professional contacts. For those directors who wish to present their work to the public and press, to show inner workings of making a short film, we offer a way to do so.

Besides that, we will organize a number of workshops and meetings with potential employers, during which there will be held the discussions of “hot” topics in the film industry.

Moreover, we’re proud to continue our collaboration with International Mattador Award for Screenplay for young talented writers of 16-30 years old, dedicated to Matteo Caenazzo.

Destination Point: Trieste, Piazza Verdi

One of our greatest strengths is, of course, the city itself. Situated on the eastern border of Italy, right between the Adriatic and the Karst Plateau, Trieste is an ideal place for a film festival.

Piazza Verdi, seat of the Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi, where three of our previous editions took place, is chosen to hold our short film marathon once more.

Rules 2015

ORGANISATION

ShorTS International Film Festival is organised by Associazione Maremetraggio and is sponsored by Public and Private Entities.

  1. DATES & DURATION

ShorTS International Film Festival is held in Trieste, Italy, from the 5th to the 11th of July 2015 and will last for 7 (seven) days.

  1. SECTIONS

The Festival is divided in two sections:

Maremetraggio Section

Last Chance Section

  1. MAREMETRAGGIO SECTION

This section is reserved for short films that won one or more prizes in one or more international festivals during the 2014. All submitted works must not exceed 20 minutes in terms of length (titles included) and must have been produced after  the January, 2013.

The films are selected at the incontestable discretion of  the Artistic Direction of the Festival.

The participants must send the requested materials (see paragraph  6) by the 28th of February 2015 (the evidence shall be constituted by the date of dispatch).

The Artistic Direction will choose a Jury of experts that will award the following prizes:

 

-Best Short Film Award (€ 10.000)

-Best Italian Short Film Award

-Best Animation Short Film Award

-Critics’ Choice Award for  Best Short Film

-People’s Choice Award for Best Short Film

 

The jury reserves the right to assign honorable mentions or nominate for first equals.

The Audience Award will be given after the votes of the audience.

The short films participating in the Web Initiative on the Internet will compete for an eventual Web Audience’s Award.

Please note that the € 10.000 prize is a subject to taxation according to the Italian law ( 25% – art. 30, 2° comma DPR 600/73)

  1. LAST CHANCE SECTION

This section includes films that did not win any Award. Submitted films must not exceed 10 minutes (titles included) and must have been produced after January, 2014. All genres are eligible.

Ten selected films from this section will be included in the Maremetraggio Section of the Festival and will be eligible for its Awards and prizes.

  1. MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR THE APPLICATION

All interested in participation must file the application form on the Official Website of the Festival: www.maremetraggio.com and enclose two DVDs with the film (preferably subtitled) and the Entry Form printed and signed.

FOR CULTURAL PURPOSES ONLY, NO COMMERCIAL VALUE

We will not send back the DVDs as they will be included in the Festival archive. There is a possibility that the work will be used for non-profit purposes (screenings in schools, cinema experts clubs, et al.)

For any other kind of usage, The Organisation will have to ask for permission

  1. SELECTED FILMS

The authors of the selected films will be contacted by the Organisation and will be advised to send the materials requested at moment of selection (photos, texts, dialogue lists…) .

The screening copy of the selected shorts must be sent by the 12th of June 2015.

Important note: the screening copy must be in PAL format. The copies sent in NTSC format will not be screened due to technical incompatibilities.

The shipping costs are paid by the Sender, and the Festival will cover thereturn costs.

  1. FILM SCREENING

The schedule and the programme of the screenings will be specified by the Artistic Direction of the Festival.

  1. PRIZES

-Best Short Film Award (€ 10.000)

-Best Italian Short Film Award

-Best Animation Short Film Award

-AMC’s Award for Best Italian Short Film

-Critics’ Choice Award for  Best Short Film

-People’s Choice Award for Best Short Film

The Artistic Direction of the Festival reserves the right to change the above-mentioned awards.

The winners are kindly asked to mention the prizes won at Maremetraggio in all publications, credits and promotional materials of the film

  1. GENERAL RULES

Each author is liable for the content of his or her works.

The participants authorize the Festival to use their name and address for all the purposes related to the event. The information in the Entry Form will be published in the catalogue of the Festival and on the Festival’s Website.

The participation in the Festival implies the full understanding of this regulation and compliance with its terms.

This regulation is issued in Italian and English languages. In case of problems  or contradictions relating to the interpretation, the Italian version is deemed authentic.
