Thriller, sciencefiction and crime: The Manetti Bros. are guests at ShorTS International Film Festival 2018

 A homage to the Marco and Antiono Manetti’s cinema was announced at a press conference this morning.

 The two directors are taking part in the Trieste-based festival, scheduled from June 29th to July 7th. There will be screenings of their greatest works, from their first features to the multi-award winning “Ammore e Malavita”

Friday 22nd June, Trieste – During this morning’s press conference for the 19th edition of the ShorTS International Film Festival, scheduled from June 29th to July 7th in Trieste, the organisation announced a homage to the filmography of the Manetti Brothers.

The 2018 edition of the Triestine festival will play host to, amongst others, the two Roman directors, who will take a lead role at the event where here will be screenings of their greatest works, from their first features to the multi-award winning Ammore e Malavita.

 Marco and Antonio Manetti, known as the Manetti Bros., began their cinematic career in the 1990s, establishing themselves from the autset as being true genre cinema enthusiasts. The directing duo have also made numerous successful music videos, including for Er Piotta, Alex Britti and Tiromancino, and ended up attracting wider public attention thanks to the much lauded TV series L’ispettore Coliandro.

 In between has been a career studded with many successes, indicated by an eclectic and original filmography, in the name of the best of Italian cinema. The ShorTS International intends to explore and celebrate this extraordinary journey by means of a selection of screenings of their greatest films

The homage to the Manetti’s will begin on Monday 2nd July at 21.30 at Cinema Ariston, with a screening of Song ’e Napule, a stunning reinterpretation of the Italian crime film Alessandro Roja and Giampaolo Morelli are the protagonists, and it won 7 Nastri d’Argento awards and 6 David di Donatello awards.

Tuesday 3rd July we return to Cinema Ariston at 19:30 for a screening of Piano 17, the Manettis’ second feature. Here they have made a frenetically paced black comedy set in a lift, enriched by Giampaolo Morelli’s perforamnce, Massimo Ghini participation and a cameo from Valerio Mastandrea.

At 19.30 on Wednesday 4th July at the ShorTS HUB in Piazza della Borsa an encounter with the Manetti Bros. will take place, moderated by film crtitic and general delegate of the Venice International Film Critics’ Week, Giona A. Nazzaro. Then, at 21.30, the film L’arrivo di Wang will be shown at Cinema Ariston. It’s a sciencefiction tale imbued with black humour with Ennio Fantastichini and Francesca Cuttica.

The homage will finish on Thursday 5th July at 22.00 at Cinema Ariston with a screening of Ammore e Malavita in the presence of the two directors. The evening will be led by the journalist Maurizio di Rienzo and Beatrice Fiorentino, curator of the Nuove Impronte section. A victor at the David di Donatello awards, as winner of the Ciak d’oro and the Golden Globe for Best Comedy of the year, the Manetti Bros. most recent film is an overwhelming musical, as well as a new declaration of love for Naples from the directors.

The Trieste based festival, scheduled from June 29^th to July 7^th, announces the section dedicated to the finest works from the rising stars of Italian cinema.

Along with documentaries, noir, horror and melodrama will take the lead in Nuove Impronte 2018, which this year will once again select 7 Italian directors who, although not yet well established, have already earned themselves a reputation for being talented and courageous.

Also scheduled are the out-of-contest screenings of Sergio Stivaletti’s Rabbia Furiosa, a film inspired by the crimes of Pietro De Negri (known as the “Canaro della Magliana”), which will be presented by the director, and of Roberta Torre’s Shakespeare-flavoured musical Riccardo va all’inferno, which will be screened in the presence of theatre director and actress Sonia Bergamasco.

Amongst the jury members will be director Sydney Sibilia, known for her Smetto quando voglio (I Can Quit Whenever I Want) trilogy, director Giovanna Taviani and producer Marco Alessi.

These directors may not yet be well established, but they clearly already distinguish themselves with their courage, talent and precise handiwork. This is the inspiration behind Nuove Impronte, a traditional section of the ShorTS International Film Festival, scheduled from June 29^th to July 7^th in Trieste.

It is a competitive section that, once again in 2018, will choose the best works from the rising stars of Italian cinema. There are 7 works in competition, brought together by their status as genre cinema: a selection in which noir, crime, horror and melodrama find themselves side by side with finely crafted documentaries.

‘By bringing together the seven titles that make up Nuove Impronte’, explains journalist and critic Beatrice Fiorentino, the section curator, ‘we wanted to exude a clear signal: suggesting a concrete possibility that genre cinema is being reborn in the Italian cinema industry. If the recovery of genre cinema is one of the most considerable points of interest this season and documentary confirms its status as one of the most free and creative areas of our industry, we at ShorTS International Film Festival have decided to concentrate all our energy on these two aspects. This reaffirms the festival’s purpose as being one of exploration, discovery and discussion about modern cinema and its new expressive qualities”, she concludes.

The meetings and special events at the 2018 ShorTS International Film Festival also all focus on the same areas, giving life to a programme which moves towards the (re)discovery of a cinematic tradition from the past, pointing itself squarely towards the future.

THE FILMS IN COMPETITION FOR THE 2018 NUOVE IMPRONTE SECTION

La terra dell’abbastanza (2018) by Damiano and Fabio D’Innocenzo – The D’Innocenzo brothers’ debut film is a sad tale set in the suburbs of Rome. It touches on such subjects as criminal education and destiny, and was presented at Berlin in the Panorama section.

The End – L’inferno fuori (2018) by Daniele Misichia – Produced by the Manetti brothers, Daniele Misichia’s cinematic debut is an apocalyptic zombie movie set against the backdrop of a simultaneously enraged and indifferent Rome, with Alessandro Roja as the protagonist. The film can be viewed in Italian cinemas as of 14^th August 2018 thanks to 01 Distribution.

Veleno (2017) by Diego Olivares – Diego Olivares, in his second fiction feature after I cinghiali di Portici, has made a civil drama set in the Terra dei Fuochi (an area in Campania). Starring a superb Luisa Ranieri who is like a present day Anna Magnani, alongside Massimiliano Gallo and Salvatore Esposito.

Gatta cenerntola (2017) by Alessandro Rak, Ivan Cappiello Marino Guarnieri and Dario Sansone – Alessandro Rak, having already made the multi-award-winning L’arte della felicità, unites the forces of Ivan Cappiello, Marino Guarnieri and Dario Sansone to give life to a one of the fables from Basile’s Pentamerone. The result is a superb animated noir, which adapts the famous tale with a contemporary, dark and gangster tone.

Città giardino (2018) by Marco Piccarreda – A documentary that aims to capture the immobility of tragedy by showing the reality of life in an immigration centre. Six unaccompanied minors spend extremely long and slow days imagining a utopian space of freedom.

Happy Winter (2017) by Giovanni Totaro – Totaro uses the documentary format to show a summer in Mondello, near Palermo. The heaving beaches, trying to be summery for many holidaying families, mirror the contradictions of a post-crisis Italian society.

The First Shot (2017) by Federico Francioni and Cheng Yan – Award-winning in 2017 at the Mostra del Nuovo Cinema di Pesaro, Francioni and Yan’s documentary is a journey in search of identity in the new China, vividly representing the sense of disorientation harboured by the generations born after Tienanmen.

The films in competition will compete for the Crédit Agricole FriulAdria Prize for best film, the IL PICCOLO Public Prize, the Critic’s Prize chosen by the SNCCI, the Best Production Prize awarded by the AGICI, and the ANAC Prize for best screenplay.

Stories that upset the rules!

Come to the special world of short films! Those stories so small, but full of ideas and inventions that can upset the rules. The apple, an icon of the discovery of Newtonian gravity, subverts the rules and becomes a center of gravity itself! It crystallizes the moment floating in the air without falling on the hand. Prepare to watch and admire all the changing facets of the human inventiveness known and not!

Quest’anno la sezione dedicata ai più piccoli si trasforma e si rinnova, dando vita a Shorter Kids’n’Teens. Due le giornate dedicate ai cortometraggi per ragazzi, come nelle edizioni precedenti, ma da quest’anno divisi per età: martedì 3 luglio, con Shorter Kids, concorso dedicato ai bambini dai 6 ai 10 anni; mercoledì 4 luglio, concorso dedicato ai ragazzi dagli 11 ai 15 anni.

Siamo alla ricerca di giovani giurati per comporre le due giurie che eleggeranno i cortometraggi vincitori di Shorter Kids’n’Teens.

In the 2018 edition, which will be held in Trieste from 29 June to 7 July, the Festival inaugurates the brand new ShorTS Virtual Reality section, entirely dedicated to short films made with the VR technique. 

The program includes 26 short films from all over the world, which will be screened in Piazza della Borsa in a space equipped with viewers and swivel seats.

After the Venice Film Festival, ShorTS is  one of the first festivals in the world to have a competitive section dedicated to virtual reality.

The 2018 edition of ShorTS International Film Festival looks to the future: and it does so by introducing the brand new ShorTS Virtual Reality section, entirely dedicated to short films shot in virtual reality. An innovative competitive section, which will go alongside the historical sections such as Maremetraggio, SweeTS4Kids and Nuove Impronte, and which includes 26 short films made with the virtual reality technique in monoscopic or stereoscopic version. The winner will be awarded with the 2,000 euros EstEnergy Hera Comm prize.

The 26 shorts in competition come from the 5 continents, from America to Russia, from Australia to England, from China to Senegal, not forgetting European productions from Belgium, France, Holland, Sweden and Italy. The genres go from documentary to science fiction, from fiction to animation, all united by the common technique of virtual reality: technology now becomes a new mean of artistic expression, offering to the audience of ShorTS a new way of living cinema.

Italy will be represented by two short films: Chromatica by Flavio Costa, an experience of virtual reality that talks about music, colors and love, and Dreams of Blue by Valentina Paggiarin, which draws the viewer into a dystopic atmosphere à la Black Mirror.

The moving Pearl, the first animated short in virtual reality to be nominated for the Oscars © in 2017, is also competing. The director is Patrick Osborne, winner of the Oscar © in 2015 thanks to the short film Feast.

After the Venice Film Festival, ShorTS is one of the first festivals in the world with a section entirely dedicated to virtual reality, the latest technological milestone in cinema. The 19th edition of the Festival, organized by Associazione Maremetraggio, will be held from June 29th to July 7th 2018 in Trieste.

Thanks to the technical assistance of IKON, a regional excellence that deals with Virtual Reality, in piazza della Borsa a space dedicated to all activities and collateral events of the Festival will be arranged and, above all, the VR room for the vision of short films in Virtual Reality will be set up.

Inside the VR room there will be different spots where the audience will have the opportunity to see the films in competition and decree the best short film. Each spot will be equipped with a viewer and a swivel chair that will allow the audience to view the shorts and move at 360 ° to experience a new way of making movies.
