Un film che percorre l’Europa lungo lo sguardo del Danubio. Realizzato attraversando 8 paesi e 9 idiomi, da Ovest a Est, dal Capitalismo al Comunismo, dalla Foresta Nera al Mar Nero, scorrendo tra le mescolanze, le fratture e le contraddizioni culturali delle terre che il grande fiume attraversa. Come un road movie si muove dalle sorgenti in Germania, passando per l’Austria e alcuni paesi dell’ex blocco comunista – Slovacchia, Ungheria, Croazia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania – fino a sfociare nel Mar Nero, in un viaggio dal passato all’avvenire dell’Europa.


A film about a journey along the Danube from the viewpoint of the river itself. The shoot spanned 8 countries and 9 languages, from West to East, from Capitalism to Communism, from the Black Forest to the Black Sea, flowing between the mixtures, the rafts, and the cultural contradictions of the lands crossed by the great river.
Conceived as a road movie, it follows the river from its source in Germany, across Austria and some former Communist countries – Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania – all the way to its mouth in the Black Sea, on a journey from the past to the future of Europe.

In un mondo abbandonato dagli uomini, un monaco meccanico insegue uno strano omino rosso. Dopo aver attraversato boschi, città morte e lande desolate, i due buffi personaggi raggiungono la cima di una collina magica. Il ritrovamento di un vecchio peluche d’orso ormai malandato li farà riconciliare. Uniranno così le forze, nella speranza di poter dare vita al giocattolo inanimato e sfuggire al vuoto che li circonda.


In a world abandoned by humans, a mechanical monk follows a strange little red man. After crossing forests, dead cities and desolate plains, the two odd characters reach the top of a magic hill. The discovery of a torn teddy bear who’s in bad shape reconciles the two. They join forces, in hope of bringing the inanimate toy to life and escaping the void that surrounds them.

Edoardo è un aspirante chirurgo, Cosimo un cameriere che serve nei catering importanti. Le loro vite si intrecciano su quella di Giulia. E allora gli ospedali di Roma Nord si mescolano alle strade di Roma Sud in un inverno diverso per la capitale italiana.


Edoardo is an aspiring surgeon, and Cosimo is a formal catering waiter. Their lives intersect with Giulia’s, and the hospitals of north Rome blend with the streets of south Rome in a different kind of Winter for the Italian Capital.

ShorTS – International Film Festival

Trieste, Italy, 1st-9th July 2016

XVII Edition

The XVII Edition of ShorTS International Film Festival is coming! The Festival, lauded in Italy and all over the world, will take place in Trieste, Italy, from 1st  to 9th July 2016, in the magnificent piazza Verdi.  As usual, we’ll be offering 9 days of excitement and promising new cinema.

Screening marathons, special events, workshops, cocktail parties, Q&As, meetings with actors and film-makers – we’ll have it all! The Festival is dedicated to emerging cinema, and always attracts many guests, new talents and film celebrities from all over the world, as well as tourists eager to enrich their stay in Trieste and Friuli-Venezia-Giulia.

Sections of  ShorTS  2016

Our traditional Maremetraggio section is reserved for short films which earned prizes and honorable mentions from international film festivals in 2015. All films in this section will compete for the Best Short Film Award (€ 5.000). Moreover, many other awards and prizes feature in this section, including:  Best Italian Film, Best Animated Short Film, People’s Choice Award and the AMC Award. There’s also the Studio Universal Award, a prestigious prize from our partners at Studio Universal (Mediaset on DTT), the movie channel brought to you by movie-makers. Winners of this prize will be win the chance to enter into a relationship with Studio Universal.

We are also happy to announce the return of the Last Chance section, which features recent (produced after January 2015) films that did not win any awards and do not exceed 10 minutes in length. Ten films from this section are selected to compete in the Maremetraggio Section of the Festival and will therefore be able to compete for its awards and prizes.

Spotlight on Young Talent

In the past, we’ve offered spotlights on famous Italian actors and actresses (Laura Morante, Margherita Buy, Sergio Rubini, Francesca Neri, Barbora Bobulova) and emerging new talents in Italian cinema (Elena Radonicich, Luca Marinelli, Michele Alhaique, Andrea Bosca, Michele Riondino, Alba Rohrwacher, Jacopo Olmo Antinori), who have gone on to be very successful. This year, ShorTS is inviting young, emerging talent from the Italian film industry to step into the spotlight along with the films starring said actors or actresses. Like every year public meetings will be scheduled, during which the protagonist of this year’s spotlight will tell their story and share their vision of the future of the film industry.

Focus on Foreign Cinematography

In years gone by, we have featured Japan, Kazakhstan and India in this section. This year, it’s the turn of a country slightly closer to home.

This year, in collaboration with BuSho (the Budapest Short Film Festival), ShorTS will stage an event dedicated to Hungary, its rich culture and, most of all, its excellent short films.

Even More OLTRE IL MURO

Associazione Maremetraggio, always striving to enhance its reputation as a social force in the local area, aims to bring cinema to those who need it. Since 2009, we have extended our programme of film screenings in the Casa Circondariale di Trieste (prison – T.N.). In 2012, as the initiative was receiving increasingly positive feedback from the inmates,  it became something bigger. We added educational value, as well as enough content to last the whole year. Thanks to the invaluable collaboration of Davide Del Degan and Festival President and Artistic Director Chiara Valenti Omero, we have organized a series of lectures and meetings with a view to educating the inmates about basic cinematographic notions, as well as encouraging them to turn to cinema production themselves. In addition, some of the inmates will be included on the jury for future editions of ShorTS, and will choose the winner of the OLTRE IL MURO Award.

Special Events

As evidenced in previous editions by the Videoarte Event in 2012 and the Fuoriscena exposition in 2013, Film Festivals can feature many art forms.  We’re to open to new artists from all over the world and ready to present their visions of art, no matter what form it may take.

We’re determined to have one evening of our Festival in the Bathhouse La Lanterna, using the floating screen for film screenings. The atmosphere of the evening will be even more magical thanks to the ambience of this special place, better known by locals as El Pedocin, the last bathhouse in Europe which separates the sexes, a tradition dating back to 1903 and regarded  by Triestines with a mix of pride and irony.

We’re also planning to organize a series of “cinematographic” walking tours of the city’s famous film locales. The tours will take in all of Trieste’s vistas, and will reveal many of the innumerable stories our beloved Julian city has to tell thanks to its history and unique geographical position between the West and the East. Trieste has charmed many outstanding artists: from Mauro Bolognini to Luchino Visconti,  from Cristina Comencini to Francis Ford Coppola, from Anthony Minghella to Giuseppe Tornatore. Our guide will be Nicola Falcinella, the well known Italian cinema critic.

Public Meetings and Workshops

ShorTS is a well-known supporter of young and talented film-makers, who usually start their careers with short films. By participating in our Festival, they can introduce their work to a new audience whilst simultaneously enhancing their portfolio of professional contacts. We’ll offer a way for those directors who want to present their work to the public and the press in order to show what goes into making a short film to do so.

Besides that, we will also organize a number of workshops and meetings with potential employers, during which discussions of “hot” topics in the film industry will be held.

Destination: Trieste, Piazza Verdi

One of our greatest strengths is, of course, the city itself. Situated by Italy’s easternmost border, between the Adriatic and the Karst Plateau, Trieste is an ideal place for a film festival.

Piazza Verdi, home of the Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi, where three of our previous editions took place, has been chosen to hold our short film marathon once more.

Rules 2016

ORGANISATION

ShorTS International Film Festival is organised by Associazione Maremetraggio and is sponsored by Public and Private Entities.

 

1.      DATES & DURATION

ShorTS International Film Festival is held in Trieste, Italy, from the 1th to the 8th of July 2016 and will last for 7 (seven) days.

 

2.      SECTIONS

The Festival is divided in two sections:

Maremetraggio Section

Last Chance Section

 

3.      MAREMETRAGGIO SECTION

This section is reserved for short films that won one or more prizes in one or more international festivals during the 2015. All submitted works must not exceed 20 minutes in terms of length (titles included) and must have been produced after  the January, 2014.

The films are selected at the incontestable discretion of  the Artistic Direction of the Festival.

The participants must send the requested materials (see paragraph  6) by the 29th of February 2016 (the evidence shall be constituted by the date of dispatch).

The Artistic Direction will choose a Jury of experts that will award the following prizes:

 

-Best Short Film Award (€ 5.000)

-Best Italian Short Film Award

-Best Animation Short Film Award

Award for Best Italian Short Film

-Critics’ Choice Award for  Best Short Film

-People’s Choice Award for Best Short Film

-Best Italian production Award

 

The jury reserves the right to assign honorable mentions.

The Audience Award will be given after the votes of the audience.

The short films participating in the Web Initiative on the Internet will compete for an eventual Web Audience’s Award.

 

Please note that the € 5.000 prize is a subject to taxation according to the Italian law ( 25% – art. 30, 2° comma DPR 600/73).

4.      LAST CHANCE SECTION

This section includes films that did not won any Award. Submitted films must not exceed 10 minutes (titles included) and must have been produced after January, 2015. All genres are eligible.

Ten selected films from this section will be included in the Maremetraggio Section of the Festival and will be eligible for its Awards and prizes.

 

5.      MATERIALS REQUIRED FOR THE APPLICATION

All interested in participation must file the application form on the Official Website of the Festival: www.maremetraggio.com and enclose two DVDs with the film (preferably subtitled) and the Entry Form printed and signed.

FOR NOT-FOR-PROFIT ORGANISATION

 

We will not send back the DVDs as they will be included in the Festival archive. There is a possibility that the work will be used for non-profit purposes (screenings in schools, cinema experts clubs, et al.)

For any other kind of usage, The Organisation will have to ask for permission.

 

6.      SELECTED FILMS

The authors of the selected films will be contacted by the Organisation and will be advised to send the materials requested at moment of selection (photos, texts, dialogue lists…) .

The screening copy of the selected shorts must be sent by the 11th of June 2016.

Important note: the screening copy must be in PAL format. The copies sent in NTSC format will not be screened due to technical incompatibilities.

 

The shipping costs are paid by the Sender, and the Festival will cover thereturn costs.

 

7.      FILM SCREENING

The schedule and the programme of the screenings will be specified by the Artistic Direction of the Festival.

The Artistic Direction of the Festival reserves the right to change the above-mentioned awards.

The winners are kindly asked to mention the prizes won at Maremetraggio in all publications, credits and promotional materials of the films.

 

9.      GENERAL RULES

Each author is liable for the content of his or her works.

The participants authorize the Festival to use their name and address for all the purposes related to the event. The information in the Entry Form will be published in the catalogue of the Festival and on the Festival’s Website.

The participation in the Festival implies the full understanding of this regulation and compliance with its terms.

This regulation is issued in Italian and English languages. In case of problems or contradictions relating to the interpretation, the Italian version is deemed authentic.
