The trouble with nature

1769. Il filosofo Edmund Burke è scappato da Londra, dagli esattori e dalla crisi di mezza età per intraprendere un grandtour delle Alpi al fine di riscrivere il suo libro sul Sublime.
La posta in gioco è alta: Burke ha perso tutto a causa di rischiosi investimenti sulle colonie e il suo futuro dipende dal successo della nuova edizione del suo capolavoro giovanile e dal suo incontro con la natura. Rimasto senza servitù, viaggia soltanto con una domestica, un’indigena delle Indie Occidentali presa in prestito dalla piantagione di suo fratello. Il viaggio è un disastro: Burke non è mai uscito dalla città e si ritrova sperduto in Provenza, faticando persino a trovare le Alpi. Come se non bastasse, scopre di odiare la natura: punge, prude e non gli dà alcuna illuminazione. Al contrario, la serva è profondamente coinvolta da tutto ciò che la circonda e Burke inizia a provare una sensazione di amarezza e gelosia nei confronti del suo legame con le terre selvagge.

The year 1769. The philosopher Edmund Burke has fled London, from debt collectors and a growing midlife crisis, to go on a grand tour of the Alps to rewrite his book on the Sublime.
The stakes are high – Burke has lost everything in risky colonial investments and his future depends on the success of the new edition of his youthful masterpiece and his encounter with nature. Having lost his staff, he is travelling only with a native servant on loan from his brother’s plantation in the West Indies. The trip is a disaster – Burke has never been outside the city and finds himself lost in Provence, struggling even to find the Alps. Furthermore, he discovers that he hates nature – it stings, itches and fails to bring him any enlightenment. Meanwhile his servant is deeply involved with everything around her and Burke grows bitter and jealous of her easy connection to the wild environment.
