Ci saranno scelte difficili, tradimenti e riappacificazioni. Dolore e amore.

Paolo VI district, in the south of the city of Taranto. Disrupted streets, non-existent public transport, pre-fabs, the incumbent outline of the ILVA factory with its menacing venoms on the one side, the liquid profile of the “Mare Piccolo” on the other. There’s hardly anything there, and what’s there is violent and illegal. Tiziano is a borderline boy coming from a difficult family and facing a hopeless future, his girlfriend a beautiful young woman who just wants an ordinary life. Tiziano doesn’t go to school regularly, works on and off for Tonio, the local boss, and dreams he will go away one day. He lives for his mother, Maria, for his sister Lucia that he loves more than anything else, and for Stella, who loves him more than anything else. Then, there’s his Italian teacher, Mrs. Costa, who tells him that reading will save his life… But when Tiziano ends up in the minors prison there seems to be no hope left for him…

Mario is 40 years old, works as a garbage collector in Bologna, and is addicted to porn. He lives in the old town with his elderly mother, confined on a wheelchair since she suffered a stroke.

1957: a little dog, Laika, has just been rocketed out in space by the Soviets. Luciana is nine years old. Right in the middle of her First Communion ceremony, she runs away saying: “I’m not going back there, because I’m a communist!”. She inherited her passion for politics from her older brother, Arturo, a strange boy, living in a world of his own, maybe because of the drugs he’s taking for his epilepsy… He is obsessed with the Soviet Union, and with the Space Race in particular, so much so that it’s become his only subject of conversation. So much so that Luciana has gradually found herself being ashamed of her weird older brother. And with the rest of the family, well, it’s a constant argument: Luciana can’t stand her stepfather, his house, his money, and the way he tries to be a father for her. At 15, Luciana is already a member of the local FIGC (Italian Federation of the Communist Youth), she belongs to the same section her father used to be in. Her father died a long time ago, but everyone remembers him as “a true communist”. With her party comrades, Luciana experiences her first love stories and her first betrayals, getting herself and others in a lot of trouble… But the truth is that, in 1963, even among communists, having more than one man at a time or stealing another comrade’s boyfriend is something you shouldn’t do. Luciana is too aggressive, too hot-tempered, too ruthless. When the public reproach from her adult comrades will come, her brother won’t be at her side to support and comfort her, like he was when they were kids. That’s when Luciana, just like Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman astronaut, will have to do it all herself.

You’re twenty years old and your life is like a supermarket full of endless possibilities: you just have to stretch your hand out and choose one. But, on a rainy evening, your car bumps into another one. It’s the car of two police officers in civil clothes, and you end up arrested because you didn’t hold still while they were hitting you. And, since then, your life hasn’t been the same anymore. Even though you still go to the same pub, the Aspettando Godard, even though the most beautiful barmaid there happens t be your girlfriend, even though you happen to have a friend who always manages to play it all down and a loving family. Anger is still eating you up, suggesting that you have made no real choices in your whole life. And, that you’re sick of waiting. Or, that same rainy evening, you stop the car on time and don’t bump into that car. Your life is not ruined by violence. You carry on growing your plants in the nursery where you work, and having your boss laugh at you when you ask for a rise. You go to your regular pub, maybe you are attracted by the barmaid, but you choose to go out with a client of the nursery, a good family girl. Nobody realizes it, not even your friend, the one who always manages to play it all down, but something keeps on eating you up, suggesting that you have made no real choices in your whole life. And, that you’re sick of waiting.

Roma.

Rome. Piazza Vittorio is a square in the centre of the Esquilino, an ancient district in Rome where the bourgeois bureaucrats used to live in the late nineteenth Century. Surrounded by more touristic spots and the heart of the city’s social life, the area is near the central station, which makes it, as it often happens in other metropolitan cities in the world, a multifaceted mix of various ethnic and cultural groups of people. A very old building of the late 19th Century sees the stories of a very diverse group of residents unfold within its walls: it’s a small “multi-ethnical crowd”, with strong differences in culture, origin and religion, and very different ideas on life. In the limited space of the building, a true clash of civilizations takes place, as those differences start to pervade daily life and turn into misunderstanding, abuse of power, distrust. The stories of the single characters unfold and cross each other within the restricted spaces of the neighbourhood, the building, and the elevator, at the centre of many disputes between residents. The loneliness, the pain of living expressed by each of these characters offers an insight on their life experiences, their thoughts and their feelings in a social perspective.
