Romana, a 13 years old gypsy ends up in Giampiero’s class in a district on the outskirts of Rome, where the boy lives with his parents Alfredo e Luciana who, like other people in this area try to leave with dignity, coherence and honesty. Luciana is a painter and she is unhappy with her life. Alfredo has a fruit and vegetable shop. Otello spends all his day in the district selling drinks. Italo has a bar and he is a kind of “spiritual guide” in the area. Between Giampiero and Romana, a relation made of gentleness and confidence is developed. One day Otello is robbed while is selling drinks in the Rom’s camp. As revenge, he accuses Romana.
This signals the beginning of a “war” between the Rom and the district that will lead all the inhabitants to start a fire in the Rom’s camp. The tensions do not interfere very much on the relation between Giampiero e Romana until Romana’s father, an alcoholic, looses in a game of cards with Fulberto, an old gypsy. When Fulberto comes to take Romana, he finds her with Giampiero who tries to defend her and ends up being beaten up. All this increases the district’s anger… Time passes, yet Giampiero does not forget Romana. He eventually meets up with her again to find her very much changed, but not defeated.
