Dario, a professor at the University of Milan, has a strong and peaceful relationship with his son Emilio. Despite his being only fifteen, Emilio is exceptionally sensitive and attentive to social problems. One day, the whole family goes on a trip to visit grandma, together with Giulia and Sandro, one of Dario’s students. They both seem to be on very familiar terms with Dario, while they are reserved and unfriendly to the rest of the family. Emilio, who is very keen on photography, curiously observes and photographs them. Some time later, Emilio bumps into Sandro on a crime scene following a gun battle between the police and some members of the Red Brigades: he is lying on the ground in a puddle of blood. Emilio walks home, knowing that the relationship with his dad is now ruined.
