Jens Jonsson, born 1974, studied graphic design between 1994 – 1998 and film directing between 1998-2001 at Dramatiska Institutet, Stockholm. He also drew comic strips for Swedish magazine In a relatively short time, he has written and directed many short films (including Brother of Mine, for which he received the Silver Bear in Berlin) that are striking thanks to original narrative techniques, sharp psychological insight in the characters and an emotional wisdom that is certainly surprising in view of his young age. Now Jonsson is working on his first feature.

Things that are said in the dark is a short digital film that speaks of young adults. It spies them during a night of their life. One day apparently like any other, a Saturday evening at the end of September, they are cheerful and determined. Claudia is finishing putting her make-up on and they are ready to go out. Or almost, because all of a sudden there is a blackout. It is the worst blackout in Italian history. Plunged in the most complete darkness. They initially feel suspended, lost. But they start to like it, to feel themselves free from that sudden lack of stimuli (no more music, TV, household appliances) and when they understand that the light probably won’t return as soon as they think, strangely they relax and want to play…

An elderly woman is making coffee while a man sleeps restlessly. The man wakes up. He runs in vain to catch a train that speeds away. He wants to leave, to flee: he relives his suicide – his obscure illusion – he mimes it repeatedly. Other trains pass — in vain. Then the noise of time is drowned by silence — the white, pure light of two waiting spirits. Together they try a dance step: they are youth and old age embraced to one another. Finally, when tenderness is no longer opposed by obsession, she leaves. He continues to sleep but no longer dreams.
