On Sunday 3rd July at 21:30, as part of the prestigious ShorTS International Film Festival (1st-9th July 2016) in Piazza Verdi, Mestieri del Cinema 2016 will present the screening of last year’s short in anticipation of this year’s work.

LA SANTA CHE DORME

Giacomina, dodici anni, è stata scelta come custode della statua di Santa Achillea per la processione annuale. Sarebbe il giorno più bello, se non fosse che la sua migliore amica Silene viene trovata in stato di morte apparente, ma il suo corpo è rimasto caldo. Mentre il paese grida al miracolo e decide di portare la ragazza in processione al posto della statua, Giacomina è l’unica a chiedersi se tutto è davvero perduto.

Twelve-year-old Giacomina is chosen to be the guardian of the statue of Saint Achillea for the annual procession. It would have been a most beautiful day, were it not for her best friend being found in an apparent state of death. But her body is still warm. While the village hails it as a miracle and decides to carry the girl on the procession instead of the statue, Giacomina is the only one to wonder if everything is really lost.

Gennaio 2010, Rosarno, Calabria. Le manifestazioni di rabbia degli immigrati mettono a nudo le condizioni di degrado e ingiustizia in cui vivono quotidianamente migliaia di braccianti africani, sfruttati da un’economia fortemente influenzata dal potere mafioso della ‘Ndrangheta. Per un momento l’Italia si accorge di loro, ne ha paura, reagisce con violenza, e in poche ore Rosarno viene “sgomberata” e il problema “risolto”. Ma i volti e le storie dei protagonisti degli scontri di Rosarno dicono che non è così. Scovarle e dare loro voce è oggi forse l’unica via per restituire al Paese la propria memoria: quella di quei giorni di violenza e quella del proprio recente quanto rimosso passato di miseria rurale.

January, 2010; Rosarno, Calabria. The frenzied demonstrations of immigrants reveal the stark truth of the decaying and unjust conditions in which thousands of African day labourers live every day, exploited by an economy strongly influenced by the mafia power of the ‘Ndrangheta. For a moment Italy becomes aware of them, fears them, reacts with violence, and in just a few hours Rosarno is “cleared” and the problem is “resolved”. But the faces and the stories of the protagonists of these clashes in Rosarno tell us that this is not the case. Discovering them and giving them a voice is today perhaps the only way to bring back the true memory of what happened: days of violence and very recent past removal of rural misery.

In seguito agli accordi tra Gheddafi e Berlusconi del 2009, le barche dei migranti intercettate in acque internazionali nel Mediterraneo sono state sistematicamente ricondotte in territorio libico, dove non esisteva alcun diritto di protezione e la polizia esercitava indisturbata varie forme di abusi e di violenze. Molti dei respinti, circa 2000 persone, erano richiedenti asilo. La Corte Europea dei Diritti dell’Uomo di Strasburgo ha recentemente condannato l’Italia per aver violato la Convenzione Europea dei Diritti dell’Uomo.

Following the 2009 agreement between Gaddafi and Berlusconi, migrant ships intercepted in international waters in the Mediterranean were systematically taken back to Libyan territory, where there were no rights to protection and the police serenely carried out various forms of abuse and violence. Many of those returned, about 2000 people, had requested asylum. The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has recently condemned Italy for having breached the European Convention of Human Rights.

Per oltre dieci anni abbiamo concentrato tutti i nostri sforzi economici, politici e militari a tentare di chiudere la frontiera mediterranea: c’è chi l’ha fatto con più cautela e chi con più cattiveria, ma lo scopo unico era comunque e sempre “ridurre il numero di sbarchi”, fermare e contenere. Un orizzonte che ha schiacciato le nostre capacità di ascoltare e capire i motivi e le scelte di chi viaggia. Come il peso dell’acqua, attraverso le storie di tre donne e lo sguardo di due grandi narratori civili, cerca di modificare questo orizzonte.

For over ten years, we have concentrated all of our economic, political and military forces in an attempt to close the Mediterranean border. Some have done it carefully and others more harshly, but the only objective has always been to simply “reduce the number of arrivals”, to close and to contain. A horizon that has severely reduced our capacity to listen to and understand the motives and choices of those who make the trip. By telling the story of three women and getting the insights of two great civilian narrators, Come il peso dell’acqua seeks to change this horizon.

I camion che attraversano il deserto del Teneré; le agenzie di viaggio che da Agadez, nel nord del Niger, organizzano i passaggi; ma soprattutto i rimpatri coatti effettuati dalla Libia sotto le pressioni europee.
Questo film racconta la faccia nascosta di un’emigrazione di cui noi spesso vediamo solo l’ultima tappa, lo sbarco nell’isola di Lampedusa.

The lorries that cross the Teneré desert; the travel agencies that from Agadez, in the north of Niger, organize trips; but, above all, the forced repatriations carried out by Lybia under European pressure.
This film shows the hidden side of an emigration of which we normally only see the final step: the arrival on the island of Lampedusa.

Per la prima volta in un film la voce diretta dei migranti africani sulle modalità in cui la Libia sta operando il controllo dei flussi migratori dall’Africa, per conto e grazie ai finanziamenti di Italia ed Europa.
Un viaggio di dolore e dignità, attraverso il quale Dagmawi Yimer riesce a dare voce alla memoria di sofferenze umane, rispetto alle quali l’Italia e l’Europa hanno responsabilità che non possono rimanere ancora a lungo nascoste.

For the first time in a film, the direct voices of African migrants on the way in which Libya is controlling the fluxes in migration from Africa, in the name of and thanks to financial backing from Italy and Europe.
A journey of grief and dignity, through which Dagmawi Yimer manages to give a voice to the memory of the human suffering for which Italy and Europe are culpable and from which they can no longer hide.

I SOGNI DEL LAGO SALATO

Il Kazakistan oggi vive l’euforia dello sviluppo che l’Italia non ricorda nemmeno più. Eppure la sua crescita e` legata a doppio filo con l’economia italiana. Le immagini delle grandi steppe euroasiatiche, degli spazi infiniti e ordinati delle terre post-sovietiche si intrecciano nel film e nella mente dell’autore con le immagini dell’Italia anni ‘60, trovate sia negli archivi ENI che in quelli personali girati dalla madre e dal padre di Andrea Segre, che negli anni ’60, ventenni, hanno vissuto l’euforia della crescita.

Nowadays Kazakhstan is experiencing the same euphoria as that of 60s and 70s booming Italy, a permeating feeling that Italy does not even remember today. The images of the extended Eurasian Steppe and those of the endless, ordered spaces of post-Soviet lands interlace the images of 60s Italy, extracted both from ENI’s archives and from private film clips shot by Andrea Segre’s twenty-year-old mother and father, who actually experienced the euphoria generated by the progress in Italy during the 60s.

LA MAL’OMBRA

PIP49 è la sigla dell’ennesima area industriale costruita in provincia di Vicenza, a ridosso di San Pietro, paese con poco più di mille abitanti nel territorio comunale di Rosà.
Area ad altissima intensità produttiva e nello stesso tempo di forte rilevanza ambientale, in quanto interessata da uno dei più ampi e importanti bacini di ricarica delle falde acquifere.
All’interno del PIP49 l’area più ampia è occupata dalla ValBrenta, una delle Zincherie più grandi d’Italia, contro la cui costruzione i cittadini di San Pietro hanno avviato da ormai oltre 4 anni un Presidio permanente: un piccolo tendone di fronte all’enorme fabbrica gialla.

PIP49 is the acronym for the umpteenth industrial area built in the province of Vicenza, just before San Pietro. It’s an area with little more than a thousand inhabitants within the urban area of Rosà. It’s an area of both extremely high productivity and great environmental significance, as it’s one of the largest and most important aquifer recharge basins in the area. The most expansive area inside PIP49 is taken up by ValBrenta, one of the largest galvanisation plants in Italy, up against which the citizens of San Pietro began setting up a permanent stronghold over four years ago: a small awning jutting out from the huge yellow plant.
