There are two events you can take part in – not sitting in the cinema but staying comfortably at home using a computer, smartphone or tablet to get onto the MYmovies.it website, where the whole Festival is to be held because of coronavirus.
Depending on your age, you can enrol with the jury of the Shorter TEENS section (11-15 years old), in which the films can be seen on Tuesday 7 July at 6 pm, or the KIDS section (6-10 years old), scheduled for the day after, Wednesday 8 July at 6 pm.

A masterclass with Saverio Costanzo
A special online masterclass held by Saverio Costanzo, the acclaimed director of the TV series My Brilliant Friend
The event, free of charge and open to the public, is to take place online on Zoom on Thursday 9 July.
“During the online masterclass we will discuss with Saverio Costanzo his inspirations and how his original and introspective viewpoint as a filmmaker developed”, explained Maurizio di Rienzo and Chiara Valenti Omero, directors of ShorTS International Film Festival- “and which focus on theatrical nuances expressed by bodies and souls set within contexts ‘out of this world’. A Palestinian family held hostage by an intrusive Israeli patrol (Private, Golden Leopard prize at the 2004 Locarno International Film Festival and Silver Ribbon for best first feature). A Jesuit isolated among his doubts and vocation in a Venice convent (In Memory of Me). The ring of solitude and lack of communication filled with fear, disillusion and secrets inhabited for years by a couple who later become soulmates (The Solitude of Prime Numbers). The confines of a New York home with the conflicting approaches to child-rearing of two young parents (Hungry Hearts, Coppa Volpi at the 2014 Venice Film Festival for lead actors Alba Rohrwacher and Adam Driver). The studio of a psychotherapist who is in turn in a critical situation (three seasons of the series In Treatment). A Naples brimming with quintessential feminine emotions reworked with powerful sensitivity beyond the original structure of the book (the two seasons of the series My Brilliant Friend). Film locations with architectural details, open to extreme emotions and in which the natural link between remarkable performances and solid directing is highlighted”.
Saverio Costanzo is also to receive the Cinema del Presente 2020 prize, an award through which ShorTS International Film Festival endorses and showcases the extraordinary talent of this Italian film director. “I’m very honoured to receive this award from the splendid city of Trieste”, said director Saverio Costanzo, “a crossroads of cultures and ideas, which offers, through its Festival, different and vital cinematic viewpoints while maintaining its twenty-year-old tradition and presenting images of the present whose strength is often rooted in the past. The specific focus by ShorTS on short-length films is important and highlights the mission of shorts, that of launching new narratives necessary for the cinema of the future”.
Born in Rome in 1975, Saverio Costanzo is one of the most admired filmmakers on the Italian film scene. In 2004 he directed his first feature film Private, winner of the Golden Leopard award and the prize for best lead actor at the Locarno International Film Festival and later released in over twenty-five countries.
In summer 2006 he made In Memory of Me, filmed on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice and selected to compete at the Berlinale in 2007. 2010 was the year of his third feature film, The Solitude of Prime Numbers, taken from the novel of the same name by Paolo Giordano which sold two million copies in Italy and was translated into more than thirty languages. The film competed at the 67th Venice Film Festival.
In 2014 he directed Hungry Hearts starring Alba Rohrwacher and Adam Driver. The film was presented in competition at the Venice Film Festival where it won two Coppa Volpi awards for the performances of the two lead actors. Costanzo then directed for Sky Cinema the Italian adaptation of In Treatment Seasons 1, 2 and 3, the HBO series of the same name taken from the Israeli format created by Hagai Levi. In 2018 he directed the first two seasons of the Rai Fiction-HBO series My Brilliant Friend, taken from the first two books of the four-part trilogy written by Elena Ferrante and published in Italy by Edizioni E/O.
Shorts Pitching Training 2020
Online training workshop for short film projects
3rd-4th July, 2020
ShorTS International Film Festival, in collaboration with NISI MASA – European Network of Young Cinema and Italian Short Film Center, presents also for this edition the ShorTS Pitching Training, a workshop aimed at young directors who have a project of short film. During the workshop participants will learn how to create effective and persuasive pitches for their projects, specifically to present short films projects.
Due to the current situation, the Pitching Training has to change its traditional structure, but it is an opportunity for us to experiment a completely new and different version of the workshop. Only for this year it will be held online in English by Jérôme Nunes from NISI MASA, tutor of the workshop. The selected projects will be 5 and the participants will have two individual sessions on Zoom with the tutor, organized as follows:
– 1-hour individual session about their project for an in-depth analysis and discussion, creating a dialogue and comparing feedback about the project
– 1-hour individual session on the pitch, learning the basics of creating an effective pitch and working on their own one
Then, participants will create a 5-minute video-pitch where they can immediately put into practice what they learned during the workshop. Projects will be presented to a short list of producers.
The workshop will be held on the 3rdand the 4th of July. The detailed organization of the two days of workshop will be communicated to participants later.
About the registration:
Participants will have to register on-line, using the registration form available below and including all the required material.
Requests of registration must be submitted no later than (new deadline) June 7th 2020. A maximum of 5 participants will be selected. Participants must already have a project of short film and the selected projects will be announced on June 15th .
The registration is free of charge. Participants that will be selected will have to pay a 30 euro tuition fee for the workshop.

ShorTSIFF: la 21a edizione arriva sul web!
Il festival sbarca sul web dal 4 al 12 luglio 2020. Appuntamento online con film e cortometraggi in anteprima, pitching, masterclass con autori ed esperti del settore cinematografico e la maratona di fumetti.
ShorTS International Film Festival, organizzato dall’Associazione Maremetraggio, da Trieste arriva sul web dal 4 al 12 luglio 2020. La 21° edizione del Festival si svolgerà online grazie al supporto tecnico di MYmovies, sito leader in Italia nell’informazione cinematografica, nonché attraverso i canali ufficiali della manifestazione (Sito Ufficiale – Pagina Facebook – Instagram). Accanto alle tradizionali sezioni competitive dedicate a corti e lungometraggi, che in questa edizione saranno per il pubblico fruibili gratuitamente sul web previa registrazione, il Festival organizzerà incontri online con autori e professionisti del cinema e una Masterclass dell’autore cui andrà il premio Cinema del Presente che presto annunceremo.
Tra le novità dell’edizione 2020, Science & Society, nuova sezione competitiva dedicata a corti provenienti da tutto il mondo che si contendono un premio di 3000,00 € realizzata in collaborazione con ESOF2020 Trieste (EuroScience Open Forum), la più importante manifestazione europea focalizzata sul dibattito tra scienza, tecnologia, società e politica, in programma a Trieste dal 2 al 6 settembre 2020.
Accanto a Science & Society, ShorTS IFF conferma lo svolgersi delle collaudate sezioni competitive Maremetraggio, Shorter Kids’n’Teens, Nuove Impronte.
Storica sezione competitiva di ShorTS, a cura di Francesco Ruzzier, per Maremetraggio concorrono i corti che abbiano ottenuto un premio a uno o più Festival a livello internazionale nel corso dell’anno 2019. Confermato anche per il 2020 il premio al miglior corto consistente in 5000,00 €. In questa sezione in palio anche il premio al miglior corto italiano, il Premio Prem1ere Film per il miglior cortometraggio non distribuito e il Premio AMC per il miglior montaggio italiano.
Appuntamento anche con la proiezione online di cortometraggi fuori concorso: dopo avere ospitato nelle precedenti edizioni corti da Kazakistan, Giappone, Ungheria, India, Regno Unito, Spagna e Islanda, il Festival propone quest’anno un focus-selezione di cinema breve dell’attiva Estonia, in collaborazione con l’Estonian Short Film Centre.
Nella sezione Shorter Kids’n’Teens partecipano cortometraggi di ogni genere dedicati ai giovanissimi, con due programmi per fasce di età, ciascuno con apposita giuria: la parte Kids con corti dedicati a bambini dai 6 ai 10 anni, e Teens con opere per ragazzi dagli 11 ai 15 anni. E saranno ancora gli stessi bambini e ragazzi a comporre le due giurie che decreteranno i vincitori della sezione.
Confermata anche Nuove impronte, lo spazio dedicato alla ricerca dei migliori lungometraggi del cinema emergente di finzione come del reale, curato dalla giornalista e critica cinematografica Beatrice Fiorentino. È la sezione competitiva che, anche in questa 21° edizione del Festival, accende i riflettori su registi esordienti o in maturazione ma già apprezzati per sguardo, coraggio e talento. I film in concorso si contenderanno il premio miglior Film, il premio della Critica assegnato dal SNCCI, il premio migliore Produzione consegnato dall’AGICI e il premio ANAC alla migliore sceneggiatura. MYmovies invece assegnerà il Premio del Pubblico all’opera più votata on line.
Si svolgerà invece in modo ibrido la 24 Hours ShorTS Comics Marathon, la maratona di fumetti organizzata dal Festival: un contest gratuito dedicato a disegnatori di ogni età che vorranno cimentarsi in una maratona artistica durante la quale, in sole 24 ore, dovranno realizzare un cortometraggio a fumetti. Gli elaborati vincitori si aggiudicheranno la pubblicazione in un volumetto che raccoglierà il meglio dei lavori dell’edizione; la giuria sarà composta da quattro importanti nomi della scena contemporanea del fumetto (e non solo).
Appuntamento anche quest’anno con lo ShorTS Pitching Training, workshop organizzato dall’Associazione Maremetraggio in collaborazione con Nisi Masa–European Network of Young Cinema che si svolgerà interamente online: due giorni di formazione durante i quali i partecipanti, su base mondiale di selezione, impareranno come realizzare presentazioni (pitch) efficaci e persuasive dei loro progetti di realizzazione di cortometraggi. Le lezioni saranno tenute in lingua inglese, come sarà anche per i pitching che a fine workshop i partecipanti esporranno di fronte a una rosa ristretta di produttori selezionati.
“È un anno particolare per tutti e dopo aver riflettuto molto siamo giunti alla conclusione che trasferirci online fosse l’unica strada percorribile per questa edizione” – afferma Chiara Valenti Omero, presidente e co-direttore del Festival- “Lavoreremo consapevoli che le difficoltà sono molte e che questa è una sfida di grande responsabilità, soprattutto per l’attenzione che bisogna prestare agli standard qualitativi e tecnici e perché ShorTS non dimentica che l’obiettivo primario del nostro Festival deve essere come sempre l’attenzione nei confronti tanto di autori e produzioni/distribuzioni quanto del nostro pubblico. Ovviamente questo avverrà nell’attesa di poterci rivedere e riabbracciare di persona, magari capitalizzando in futuro ciò che stiamo vivendo in questo periodo, che comunque ci lascerà qualcosa di positivo (inteso non in senso virulento…)”.
Aggiunge il co-direttore del Festival Maurizio di Rienzo: “la eterogeneità e la peculiarità delle forme di Cinema espresse nelle diverse sezioni di ShorTS e i dialoghi, non solo tecnici, con registi e interpreti, resteranno il fulcro di un percorso di scoperte, confronti, idee, da considerare tutt’altro che ‘virtuale’. Un cammino che si originerà da Trieste, città e civiltà di storici incroci e confini mutanti, di spettacolare orizzonte creativo in questo inizio di millennio ampliato appunto dal nuovo Cinema che qui si pensa, sostiene, realizza, proietta”.

In questo singolare quanto delicato momento, ShorTs scorre nei canali digitali per esserci cambiando il modo ma non il contenuto. Quest’anno la platea è la rete: ogni luogo è al suo interno per un pubblico sempre connesso. Una semplice mano diventa lo strumento primario che permette di congiungere mondo materico ad universo digitale diventando il trànsfer tra l’essere ed il festival. Nasce così il punto d’intersezione tra una vivace socialità del contatto – dal colore rosso vivo – e l’azzurro dello spazio infinito rappresentante della condivisione digitale. Elementi grafici e testuali vengono inseriti all’interno del visual minimal di quest’anno dove, proprio i dispositivi elettronici, sono al centro della fruizione dell’evento. Con il gioco di parole “press shorts to unlock” (il sempre presente “press home to unlock” su ogni schermo touch) vogliamo augurare un ritorno allo scorrere della vita “normale” per superare con positività il lockdown generale.
