Duane Hopkins was born in the ‘Cotswolds’, a rural area in Southern England. After leaving school he attended Art School, where he studied mainly as a painter and photographer. Soon after being accepted to study Fine Art in London, he made his first film on video. This experience made him rethink and he left painting to study film in the North of England. Hes graduation short ‘Routine’ was well received on the festival circuit and won several awards. Since then he have made two short films ‘Field’ and ‘Love Me Or Leave Me Alone’ which has allowed hem to investigate the style of cinematic grammar he find interesting and develop his approach to storytelling. He have also been concentrating on writing scripts which reflect him thematic interests within cinema. He admire the work of Robert Bresson, Alan Clarke, Bill Douglas, Werner Herzog, Andrei Tarkovsky, Yasujiro Ozu and Stanley Kubrick amongst others. His influences tend to be filmmakers who are interested in the creation of a personal cinematic grammar that juxtaposes ideas and meanings as opposed to a strict adherence to a conventional narrative structure.
