Francesco Di Napoli will be awarded with the Prospettiva Award, a yearly acknowledgement dedicated to the emerging talents of Italian cinema.

ShorTS International Film Festival, which runs from the 28th of June to the 7th of July, announces the presentation of the 2019 Prospective Award. The prestigious recognition of the 20th edition of the triestine festival will be bestowed to Francesco Di Napoli, the young and talented protagonist of the film ‘La paranza dei bambini’ by Claudio Giovannesi, based upon the novel by Roberto Saviano. Successfully presented at the 69th edition of the Berlin International Film Festival, it won the Silver Bear award for best screenplay. ‘La paranza dei bambini’ was produced by Palomar with Vision Distribution, in collaboration with Sky Cinema and TIMVISION, and will be distributed to movie by Vision Distribution from the 13th February.

As his first experience in front of the camera, the young Neapolitan, chosen from 4000 peers in a long and complex process of street casting, has conquered critics and audiences with his brilliant interpretation of Nicola. Nicola is the main character of Giovannesi’s film, who, together with his group of friends, tries to violently conquer those in power in Naples’ Rione Sanità. He becomes lost in the illusion of bringing justice in the neighbourhood through violent means. In the ignorance of their age, they live in constant war, and this criminal life will lead the group to an irreversible decision: the sacrifice of love and friendship.

“We were taken aback by the feverish energy of Franceso Di Napoli” – said the journalist and film critic Beatrice Fiorentino, curator of the NUOVE IMPRONTE section of ShorTS – “he is a clear talent that has manifested himself with overwhelming evidence since the debut in Claudio Giovannesi’s ‘La paranza dei bambini’. His angelic and innocent face, but also with his intense eyes piercing through the screen, shows someone on the cusp of manhood, and overwhelms us at first glance. His magnetism and auroral candour convinced us that we ought to bet on him straight away, and we certain that we will see him grow in his bright career ahead.”

“The age of innocence finds a psychodynamic and expressive embodiment in a fresh age of Naples in the setting of barista/ pastry chef, as a convincing newbie actor” – adds the journalist and co-director of ShorTS Maurizio di Rienzo – “Nomen omen, the boy already seen in ‘Perspective’ by the skilful Giovannesi, is the emotional rudder between good and evil of a Paranza at the mercy of new criminal waves and dramaturgical purity. In our controversial South, some children are born grown-up.”

ShorTS IFF’s Prospettiva Award represents a real beat on the future of young talents that Trieste identifies annually. Through this acknowledgement, ShorTS 2019 directs the spotlight on a promising young figure in Italian film; a judgement that has often been confirmed by the winning artists’ consequent career.

In fact, many young performers have been presented with this award over the previous editions of the Festival, including Alba Rohrwacher, Luca Marinelli, Michele Riondino, Matilda De Angelis and Daphne Scoccia, the unforgettable protagonist of ‘Fiore’. Her debut on the big screen and third film by Claudio Giovannesi was awarded the Speciale ai Nastri d’Argento Award in 2016.
