Mario is 40 years old, works as a garbage collector in Bologna, and is addicted to porn. He lives in the old town with his elderly mother, confined on a wheelchair since she suffered a stroke.

Basilicata coast to coast is a musical comedy, a journey full of unforeseen events and unexpected meetings. A gang of musicians set off on a journey that will see them walking across the Basilicata region, coast to coast from the Tirreno to the Jonio sea, to reach the Scanzano Jonico festival where they’re scheduled to perform. In a way, the journey will turn out to be some sort of therapy for all of them. Basilicata coast to coast is a collective, picaresque, singing, melancholic and bizarre comedy.Through hilarious gags, brilliant dialogue and bitter statements on life, it lifts us up to a surprising end.

1957: a little dog, Laika, has just been rocketed out in space by the Soviets. Luciana is nine years old. Right in the middle of her First Communion ceremony, she runs away saying: “I’m not going back there, because I’m a communist!”. She inherited her passion for politics from her older brother, Arturo, a strange boy, living in a world of his own, maybe because of the drugs he’s taking for his epilepsy… He is obsessed with the Soviet Union, and with the Space Race in particular, so much so that it’s become his only subject of conversation. So much so that Luciana has gradually found herself being ashamed of her weird older brother. And with the rest of the family, well, it’s a constant argument: Luciana can’t stand her stepfather, his house, his money, and the way he tries to be a father for her. At 15, Luciana is already a member of the local FIGC (Italian Federation of the Communist Youth), she belongs to the same section her father used to be in. Her father died a long time ago, but everyone remembers him as “a true communist”. With her party comrades, Luciana experiences her first love stories and her first betrayals, getting herself and others in a lot of trouble… But the truth is that, in 1963, even among communists, having more than one man at a time or stealing another comrade’s boyfriend is something you shouldn’t do. Luciana is too aggressive, too hot-tempered, too ruthless. When the public reproach from her adult comrades will come, her brother won’t be at her side to support and comfort her, like he was when they were kids. That’s when Luciana, just like Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman astronaut, will have to do it all herself.

Winter 1999. A ferryboat crosses the Venice canals. Camilla, a shy eighteen year old girl, has just arrived to study Russian Literature at Venice University. A boy in the crowd attracts her attention. He too is carrying a suitcase, he too has just arrived here. They start looking at each other: she is rather shy, he’s more upfront. Silvestro is the same age as Camilla but, unlike her, he hides his inexperience behind a naive defiance. When the ferry reaches the dock, he decides to follow the girl through the misty alleys of one of the Venice islands… That’s the beginning of a ten year long adventure leading them from Venice, where they spend their student years, to the estranged frenzy of Moscow’s theatres and busy streets.

You’re twenty years old and your life is like a supermarket full of endless possibilities: you just have to stretch your hand out and choose one. But, on a rainy evening, your car bumps into another one. It’s the car of two police officers in civil clothes, and you end up arrested because you didn’t hold still while they were hitting you. And, since then, your life hasn’t been the same anymore. Even though you still go to the same pub, the Aspettando Godard, even though the most beautiful barmaid there happens t be your girlfriend, even though you happen to have a friend who always manages to play it all down and a loving family. Anger is still eating you up, suggesting that you have made no real choices in your whole life. And, that you’re sick of waiting. Or, that same rainy evening, you stop the car on time and don’t bump into that car. Your life is not ruined by violence. You carry on growing your plants in the nursery where you work, and having your boss laugh at you when you ask for a rise. You go to your regular pub, maybe you are attracted by the barmaid, but you choose to go out with a client of the nursery, a good family girl. Nobody realizes it, not even your friend, the one who always manages to play it all down, but something keeps on eating you up, suggesting that you have made no real choices in your whole life. And, that you’re sick of waiting.

Eugenio Fusco e Duccio Monti: two police officers with very different personalities, work methods, language. Their opposite life experiences have made them incompatible. Two strangers. Eugenio is a young officer; he’s well trained, curious, ambitious, and still an idealist. Duccio is a pragmatic, experienced man: time and the job have made him come to terms with reality and maybe become slightly cynical. They meet and it’s hate at first sight. But their assignment will force them to spend entire days together following Khalid Amrazel, who has just been released from jail under the accusation of having helped a terrorist unit. He has been released after a preliminary trial, pending a final judgment, and is free until his case is cleared. Is he really dangerous? Or, as Eugenio seems to think, it’s just another serious judicial mistake following the wave of terror and suspicion after 9/11? Duccio, instead,  thinks setting him free was the real mistake.
The assignment of the two policemen starts among all these doubts, and they both have their own answers and secret questions. During the long hours they spend waiting in the car, in the hustle and bustle of a market, when sitting at a café table without ever losing sight of their suspect, they exchange hypothesis, points of view, confessions about each other and lots of sarcastic comments. But, just as they’re having the latest discussion, Khalid- the stranger, the silent object of inquiry – speaks to them. And, he seems to have a surprise in store for them.

Sonia comes from Ljubljana and works as a waitress in a hotel. Guido is a former police officer; he works as a gatekeeper in a villa on the outskirts of town. They meet by chance at a speed date. He’s a regular client. For her, it’s the first time, and it shows. A few words, an instinctive attraction. In just a few days, they learn to know each other, to open up, to show each other their respective wounds. They’re about to fall in love… when Guido dies. Suddenly, during a robbery in the villa he’s guarding. Sonia finds herself alone, facing grieving and not being able to find a sense in her loss. A loss that some believe she might be responsible for. While Sonia’s past comes back, with all its unsolved twists, everything around her starts to collapse, everything changes and all her certainties start to crumble. Nobody seems to be the same again. Not even Sonia herself. Who is she, really? And is it really Guido she keeps on seeing, against all logical explanation, or is it just figments of her imagination? And what will she do when she will get a second chance? The answers to these questions will only be revealed at the end of the film, after a constant overturning of events.

Simone, an eleven years old boy, is confined for a whole summer at home, in the Teramo countryside, under the fierce custody of his father (Francesco Pannofino). Outside blows the sweet wind of adventure; inside, it’s just bleak boredom. That’s until Lorenza arrives: she’s thirteen, a green-eyed mystery. It becomes a matter of life or death for Simone: he runs from home and flees inside her fantastic world. There, among imaginary friends talking backwards, dwarf giants, half twins, the two of them will go searching for the king of that enchanted zoo: the Match Man, who comes at night to light the way.
