Gennaio 2010, Rosarno, Calabria. Le manifestazioni di rabbia degli immigrati mettono a nudo le condizioni di degrado e ingiustizia in cui vivono quotidianamente migliaia di braccianti africani, sfruttati da un’economia fortemente influenzata dal potere mafioso della ‘Ndrangheta. Per un momento l’Italia si accorge di loro, ne ha paura, reagisce con violenza, e in poche ore Rosarno viene “sgomberata” e il problema “risolto”. Ma i volti e le storie dei protagonisti degli scontri di Rosarno dicono che non è così. Scovarle e dare loro voce è oggi forse l’unica via per restituire al Paese la propria memoria: quella di quei giorni di violenza e quella del proprio recente quanto rimosso passato di miseria rurale.

January, 2010; Rosarno, Calabria. The frenzied demonstrations of immigrants reveal the stark truth of the decaying and unjust conditions in which thousands of African day labourers live every day, exploited by an economy strongly influenced by the mafia power of the ‘Ndrangheta. For a moment Italy becomes aware of them, fears them, reacts with violence, and in just a few hours Rosarno is “cleared” and the problem is “resolved”. But the faces and the stories of the protagonists of these clashes in Rosarno tell us that this is not the case. Discovering them and giving them a voice is today perhaps the only way to bring back the true memory of what happened: days of violence and very recent past removal of rural misery.
